Becoming an Australian citizen is the last legal step in your migration story. It is a process in which a non-Australian citizen voluntarily becomes an Australian citizen. Australian citizens commit their loyalty to Australia and the people and then have the right to protect and exercise their rights and responsibilities as a citizen.

Dual citizens or nationality
Many Australians are citizens of 2 or more countries. This means one person can be an Australian citizen and another country at the same time. They may keep:

Australian citizens can become a dual country:

-If a child is born abroad and the parents are an Australian citizen (the child can become a national of that country at birth)
You may not receive all Australian consular services as a dual citizen in another country if you do not enter that country on an Australian passport.

Enter and leave Australia
As an Australian citizen, you must use an Australian passport to:
- Leaving Australia
- Re-enter Australia
An Australian passport is proof of your Australian citizenship when traveling. If you try to enter Australia without an Australian passport, you may have trouble on the border.
If you are a dual citizen and carry a foreign passport, you can use it after you leave Australia.
Enter and leave another country
You can choose to enter or leave another country on that country's passport. You may need an exit visa in your passport.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) can help Australians abroad.
