Another Slovak town listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List is the historic Bardejov, one of Slovakia's oldest towns.
The town of Bardejov (population 33,700) in eastern Slovakia was awarded a European prize, a gold medal of the UNESCO ICOMOS Fund in 1986 and was recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
The appeal of Bardejov is enhanced by the pleasant landscape with many landmarks. In the quiet valley of Bardejovský potok brook on the foothills southeast of Mount Flysch of Busov, spa of Bardejov is located. The town manages it. HISTORY
The town was mentioned in the Ipatievsky chronicles in 1241 as the settlement of Bardouev. Another document, younger than six years old, mentions that in the territory of Bardpha is a Cistercian abbey. The arrival of German colonists after the Tartar invasion spurred the development of a thriving and flourishing medieval town. The royal prerogative and above all the decision of Louis I in 1376 to promote Bardejov to liberate the royal family to accelerate further development.
Bardejov lived his best time for 15 days. The driving force of its prosperity was commerce and crafts, which placed it in one of the most important towns of the Kingdom of Hungary. The town opened itself to modern ideas in the field of culture and education in the 16th century. They were brought to the town mainly from Germany by representatives of the Renaissance humanitarianism and the Reformation.

Bardejov is said to be the most gothic style town in Slovakia. Its center consists of a collection of historic buildings arranged in areas bounded by an almost continuous ring of town fortifications. The main area of the historical core is the Radničné námestie rectangular square decorated with rows of old burger houses with typical gable facades.
The center of the square is dominated by a former City Hall building that was built in the beginning of the 16th century (1505-1509). The historic Town Hall building has an exhibition of the Šariš Museum (arišské múzeum) called "Bardejov - Free Royal Town". Another exhibit of the symbol representing this Museum from northeastern Slovakia is on display at house 27 in the square. A museum exhibition focusing on natural sciences can be found in house number 3-5 on the adjacent Rhódyho ulica street.
The square's most important monument is the Roman Catholic basilica of St. Egidius located to its north. Its construction began at the beginning of the 15th century. It was formed as a majestic gothic basilica with three islands. There is an interesting set of 11 post-Gothic altars from 15 days and 16 days over the centuries and some of the wood carvings are considered the supreme artwork of Europe.
The top of the New Gothic church tower offers a unique view of Bardejov from the bird's perspective.
The Franciscan monastery with the church is one of the town jewels. The monastery stands near the town walls, the best preserved medieval fortress system in Slovakia. Besides the stone city walls, 3 gates and 10 fortresses have been preserved.
