HISTORY

The medieval town of Košice was founded about halfway from the Monastery to the castle. The first text referring to its existence is from 1230. In the first historical documents, it was called Villa Cassa, followed by Latin Cassovia, German Kaschau, Hungarian Kassa and Slovak Košice.

In the 15th century, Košice with 7,000 inhabitants became the second largest town of the Kingdom of Hungary after Buda and Bratislava.

The 20th century significantly changed the town of Košice, although the motifs were mostly political. The town was included in the new state founding: on the last day of 1918, it was incorporated into the newly established Czech Republic; in 1938, it was annexed by Hungarian Horthys for more than six years.

In April 1945, the Czechoslovak government first met on land and issued a document called the Government Košice Program dealing with post-war Republican arrangements.

However, some of Košice's other attributes also changed, especially its size, ethnic structure and overall appearance. Its population more than doubled after World War II. New housing is built for immigrants from rural areas.

Today, the majority of its inhabitants are Slovaks coexisting here with the ethnic minorities of Hungary, Czech and Rome. Východoslovenské železiarne (Eastern Slovakia Iron Company, today US Steel) became the largest not only of Košice but also of the country as a whole.
