Established date: 1973
Size: 446,000 acres

Park events
- Miracle Gros That the literal translation of the French language is big gros seems to be an underworld crime when applied to Gros Morne National Park. Even words like immense, majestic, great and great, cannot do it fairly. It is the second largest national park in the Atlantic Ocean of Canada (four times bigger than its cousin on its east coast, Terra Nova), home to a spectacular panorama of the natural wonders : Newfoundland's second peak (2,622 feet), a freshwater fjord sheltered by towering cliffs, the highest waterfall in eastern North America, sandy beaches, beaches and caves above sea.
- Geological Conflict All this natural beauty makes the park a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, the landscape is a byproduct of Gros Morne's greatest gift: a conspicuous example of plate tectonics. Here, on the isolated and uninhabited peaks of western Newfoundland, you'll find one of the best examples of continental drift and physical remnants of collisions and celestial cleavage. that century. Here, the deep oceanic crust and rocks from the Earth's mantle lay out for everyone to see. Glaciation has added a high mountain plateau, coastal lowland, fjords, glacial valleys, waterfalls and lakes for this spectacular landscape.
How to get there
Of the four commercial airports in Newfoundland, Deer Lake is the smallest and only 20 miles from the park entrance. It has direct flights from Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.
If you're driving or cycling to Gros Morne, you'll have to catch a ferry from North Sydney in Nova Scotia. A six-hour ferry will land you in the Basques Port aux, 186 miles from the park entrance. If you travel across the 14-hour Sydney Sydney Argentia road (operating from mid-June to September), then it's the 354-mile trip to the park. A word of warning: Both ferries often have mechanical and weather delays; Booking is a must.
Once you've arrived in Newfoundland, take Trans-Canada 1 to Deer Lake. Then leave the highway and go 20 miles north along Rte. 430 (also known as the Viking Trail) to the entrance to the park in Wiltondale.
When to go
Precipitation is given at Gros Morne, with some of it falling on average every two days. Summer can bring rain and fog, sometimes creating a different world atmosphere for peak seekers. For winter visitors, rain, drizzle and fog make way for the thick waterfalls of white things loved by skiing, snowboarding and snowboarding enthusiasts.
Due to the large difference in altitude throughout the park, the temperature and wind speed can quickly fluctuate. As long as visitors are non-complain type and are prepared with lots of layers and waterproof clothing, Gros Morne is a popular park all year round. That said, you should check with park officials before setting out. The alpine trails of Mount Morne and Long Range Traverse are closed in the spring to minimize soil erosion and human intervention with animal and livestock habitat. They are also closed to ensure pedestrian safety during times of snow hiding trails.
Ways to visit
Truly appreciating Gros Morne's natural wonders requires long excursions along challenging trails. However, the park is prepared to play for different ages, with easy, short walks on the ground, plenty of coastal walkways and sandy and gravel-rich beaches.
If you're visiting children, there are five campsites up front at Gros Morne, most of which have playgrounds (though there are no service venues). Combined, the five front sites have a total of 235 campsites between them. Each of the five locations has something different to offer, from open grass areas to coastal locations to dazzling mountain views. Berry Hill location offers the widest range of services; 31 points of Green Point's beachfront is the only camping area ahead with no showers and flush toilets.
If you are not a camper, several alternative rooms are available in nearby communities and inside the park.
