Desert and Xeric Shrublands
Much of Australia's central region is desert. One of the defining characteristics of a desert is not necessarily that it does not rain, but the evaporation rate exceeds the rate of precipitation, creating a dry or xeric environment. Extremely high temperatures are typical, as a lack of humidity and cloud cover often produce cold days and cold nights. However, contrary to common belief, the desert and the xeric shrubs are home to a wide range of habitats and wildlife. The plants that thrive here include gum and eucalyptus trees as well as hard shrubs such as acacia and salt plants. Wildlife includes small rodents, mastiff bats, echidna, burglar kest and many types of lizards.
Tropical and subtropical regions
A small region of Australia is home to subtropical and tropical broadleaf forests, thought to be remnants of the ecosystem that dominated Australia's landscape millions of years ago. In contrast to desert regions, they have more stable annual temperatures and are dominated by evergreen deciduous trees. A much larger area, mainly in the northern half of the island, is defined as tropical and subtropical pastures, steppes and shrubs. Similarly, the tundra is minimal, found only at high latitudes on Australia's Antarctic islands. Plant and wildlife life is sparse here, limited to sedge and dwarf shrubs.
