BOOKING TRAVEL IMMIGRATION / TOURIST HIGHLAND CAMERON
Dense forests, vast tea plantations and five-star resorts. Discover everything you need to know about Malaysia's Cameron Highlands - from history to hotel prices - in Culture Trip's ultimate travel guide.
Cameron Highlands has been welcoming tourists for nearly a century. Most visitors come because of the cooler climate, this also allows a thriving tea and vegetable industry to be found nowhere else in Malaysia. Throw in a bizarre resemblance to the countryside of England, some really unusual wildlife and one of the most confusing mysteries in Malaysian history and you've got an intriguing destination.
The climate is mild and the tea giants
Cameron Highlands, twice the size of Penang Island, is home to one of Malaysia's largest hill stations and some of its oldest resorts. During the colonial period, both British and Malaysian residents rushed to the higher elevations of the Cameron Highlands because of the cooler and fresher air. The British built retirement homes and golf courses, while Malaysians took a break from the sweltering heat in the lowlands. When vacationers are comfortable, farmers grow lettuce and strawberries. It doesn't take long for tea-loving Britons to realize that the mild climate is perfect to nourish their favorite drink.
Fast forward to the present and BOH Tea, one of the three plantations in the Cameron Highlands, produces more than four million kilograms per year - almost enough to give every Singaporean a cup every day of the year. Modern farmers grow organic carrots, onions and cauliflower, while vendors sell these along the main road in all of Cameron Highland's eight loosely connected villages.
Malaysia's best resort
British land surveyor William Cameron stumbled upon the highlands in 1885, where there were forests and several settlements Senoi Orang Asli (West Indigenous Peoples of Malaysia). After the popularity of Taiping's Maxwell Hill and Penang Hill, the British quickly realized the region's commercial potential. In the 1930s, the Cameron Highlands (named after their founders) became a "health hill" for British residents. The average height lies above 1,200 meters (3,937 feet), creating a climate similar to that of the UK summer. Suspended temperatures in the 20s are low (Celsius) with more persistent drizzle rather than intense tropical showers. Richer travelers (and retirees) have taken time to sip tea, pick strawberries and trim roses. The popularity has attracted foreigners from across Southeast Asia, including Jim Thompson, an American expat living in Bangkok, who has revived the Thai silk industry. However,
One of Malaysia's biggest mysteries
The name Jim Thompson shocked Malaysia in the 1960s in a similar way to the current MH370. One day in 1967, Jim walked along a long trail in the Cameron Highlands. He did not return. The government searched the forests and could not find anything. Orang Asli trackers are also unlucky. Jim Thompson disappeared. Conspiracy theories explode: some think he is a secret CIA agent extracted secretly at a time when Communism tightened Southeast Asia. But no one heard any helicopters or seen anything unusual. Others say that a tiger attacked him, but found no remains. To this day, no one knows what happened.
How to get to Cameron Highlands
Due to their popularity among tourists, getting to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur or Penang is very simple. Regular buses make the three-and-a-half-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur. The bus leaving the Bersepadu Selatan Terminal and arriving in the town of Tanah Rata, costs S $ 35 (about US $ 8.46). From Penang, take a bus from Sungai Nibong bus stop to Tanah Rata. Tickets cost S $ 40 (about US $ 9.66) per person, with trips taking up to four hours.
Cameron Highlands cannot be accessed by train. But KTM goes from both Butterworth and Ipworth to Ipoh. Ipoh was the last city before it began to climb mountain roads. From Ipoh's AmanJaya bus stop to Tanah Rata, the bus is expected to take 90 minutes for RM 18.50 (about US $ 4.47). It's a good idea to stop by Ipoh, Malaysia's unknown food capital, before (or after) the Cameron Highlands.
After arriving at Cameron Highlands, visitors have three ways to get around: by foot, by shuttle bus or by taxi. On a dry day, a comfortable 4 km (2.5 miles) walk between Tanah Rata and the town of Brinchang takes an hour. Shuttle bus leaves Tanah Rata (via Brinchang) to Kampung Raja. Tickets cost $ 2 (about $ 0.48). Tourists and travelers are budget conscious based on a combination of walking and transportation.
Pro tip: shuttles have irregular schedules and often face delays. Make sure you have a rough idea of the schedule.
Taxis are the fastest and most convenient way to get around the Cameron Highlands. Idle cab outside tourist attractions and resorts. Fares will range in the range of A $ 15 (about US $ 3.62) for a short journey. If you go out at night, you will need to rely on a taxi. The main road lacks adequate street lights.
What must you do ?
The dense forests occupy more than two-thirds of the Cameron Highlands (the remaining third is mostly agricultural land). More than a dozen color-coded trails pierce the surrounding eight mountains. Follow the number one route to Mount Brinchang, the highest point of the Cameron Highlands at 2,031 meters (6,663 feet). Others lead to waterfalls, vantage points and through Moss Forest in another world. More than a quarter of plants are rare in the tropics. Sumatran antelope (looks like a cross between a goat and antelope) and Malaysian mountain pheasant live in these exotic forests. The inverted bell-shaped vase are waiting for insects to crawl inside before swallowing them up. Guides can take visitors to see these factories, as well as the infamous rotting Rafflesia Meat.
English-style teahouses are the same as in Britain's Malaya. Tea plantations, strawberry farms and a commemorative museum cater to current tourists.
International tourists enjoy hiking and exploring the Cameron Highlands, as well as learning about the region's history, while Malaysians simply prefer the opportunity to wear a warm dance shirt and swaddling blankets in one go.
What package
Daytime temperatures hover in the low 20s (Celsius), dropping to an average of 15C (59F) at night. But mercury can be embedded into a digit. Bring warm clothes (jeans and at least one dancer). The Cameron Highlands become cold and often make unsuspecting pedestrians off guard. The mountains receive a lot of rain, which tends to rain more. Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket, especially when hiking.
