Taxi is your best bet to get to and from the airport, located about 10 km from the city center. Things to do in Kuching
The Semenggoh Wildlife Center is located just outside Kuching (accessible by bus number 6 of Sarawak Transport Company or taxi). This is one of the best places in the world to see orangutans in their natural rainforest habitats and is well worth a day trip outside the city. There are nearly 30 orangutans here and it is very possible to see a few during daily feeding in the rainforest. You may also see fascinating creatures swinging above you or snooping around. For safety reasons, it is important to stay at least five meters from orangutans.
The beautiful waterfront promenade of Kuching along the southern bank of the Sarawak River and make a relaxing day or night walk. It is a popular meeting place for locals and the nearly-kilometer esplanade is home to wooden chairs, vendors, food stalls, restaurants and cafes. The waterfront becomes more vivid at night and is a great place to watch the sun set over the river.
Adjacent to the waterfront, Main Bazaar is the oldest street in the city and where you can see some examples of Chinese shophouse architecture and heritage buildings. The area is also home to a number of coffee shops and galleries, and provides the opportunity to make some browsers for souvenirs.
Anyone who likes cats will have fun locating (and taking selfies) with many cat statues in the city. Kuching means Cat, in Malay, and in addition to cat statues, there is the Cute, Lovely Cat Museum to explore. The museum is for everything cats, from pictures and even more statues, to art and exhibits that show the history of cats in Southeast Asia.
Depending on how long you will stay in Kuching, a two or three night tour to Bako National Park is highly recommended for jungle walks. There are many well-marked trails here and you're almost guaranteed to see a wide variety of wildlife including rare proboscis monkeys (found only in Borneo), long-tailed macaque, monkey silver leaf, wild boar, squirrel and lizard. The park is also home to white sand beaches to rest between walks.
