BOOKING TRAVEL IMMIGRATION / TOURISM MELAKA
Summary
The cultural significance of the city of Melaka is at the root of much of its appeal. It is very stimulating, but captivating and soothing. A symbol of cultural differences, an incredible world of magical and mesmerizing things.
Why go to Melaka
In 2008, Melaka was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and has since witnessed a steady increase in the local tourism industry. The city is a true gem for cultural addicts. It is packed with colonial relics, fascinating museums, countless incredible food options, a huge rainforest, beaches, and even a desert. The diversity of this area is actually quite incredible.
Adventure and outdoor travelers will not lack the entertainment here. With things like Skytrex canopy tours, karting rides, ATV tracking the rainforest, canoeing on the beautiful Ayer Keroh lake, picnic spots, incredible hiking trails and biodiversity Great learning, there's less to do than it is about trying to force everything in.
Discover architecture and museums commemorating the bygone era. From places like The Stadhuys and Christ Church Melaka to a museum created inside a huge Portuguese ship, there's so much to see! Bring your good camera and shoes!
When to Melaka
Melaka remains hot and humid for the whole year. Although there are more periods of rain, the temperature does not change and there will certainly be temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius during your trip. Avoid the rainy months of June and November, and if your schedule allows, try going there around April or May to explore the sun.
Where in Melaka
A large part of the accommodation options in Melaka are geared towards upmarket travelers. However, options for hobbies, budgets, and other hobbies don't have short supplies. No hiccups or hassles here - it's time to start booking your vacation!
Some of the best backpacker travelers we've ever seen are located in Melaka. Freak Hostel Hostel is a typical example. Free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a cozy movie room separate the room from the rest. All this for a minimum of 18 MYR!
A little more expensive, but worth it, is the Heeran House. Quiet, accommodation nestled by the Melaka River. With a full English breakfast including your very comfortable room, the price is very competitive. The rooms start from MYR 159 and go up to 269 MYR.
A multitude of rich options for discerning travelers in finding accommodation. Some of the more impressive locations include the Vintage Eleven and the Equatorial Melaka Hotel. Prices start at around 250 MYR and go north to 1200 MYR at a higher level.
Where to eat in Melaka ?
What to eat during your stay here? You need to be ready for this. The town has a lot of cultural gems, international restaurants, dining facilities and deserts that really remind you what you do all that exercise for.
Be sure to get a coconut shake at Klebang Original Coconut Shake - yes, that's the name of this place. It can really change your life. Also, fruit candies from Jonker sugar - we love this!
You also need to take part in some Sate Celup, skewering various things stewed in a wonderful pot of delicious sauces and vegetables. This is definitely the best thing we ate in Melaka - and that's saying a lot!
There are two skies with expansive views, steaks are professionally cooked and especially happy sunset time. If you can change, enjoy the experience. There are also plenty of international options when you need the taste of home.
How to go around Melaka
Moving around Melaka is not so easy, and the available options provide less freedom than your own scooter. However, with a bit of common sense and humor in difficult moments, travel can be controlled. Businesses are a good bet for competent and flexible visitors. They are cheap and run many routes around the city. Metered taxis, while they never use a meter, are a more expensive and sometimes inefficient option. Traffic tends to accumulate during rush hour with the small size of the roads.
A great option, if you are willing to burn some of your coconut shakes while you go in the sights around town, is a bike. MelakaBikeShare provides a really easy and convenient process for 10 MYR in twelve hours. Many of the local rooms also offer bicycles to rent at prices that vary from place to place.
Lastly, trishaws offer a fun and moderately cheap ride to points around the city. It is generally agreed that MYR40 for an hour of use is a fair deal. Be sure to bid with drivers before you roll, though!
How to get to and from Melaka
Traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka is relatively painless and quite fast. Between 10 - 15 MYR and two hours on the bus, you will arrive at Melaka Sentral. This route is a common route, and as such, buses leave very frequently, every half hour from 7 am to 11 pm. Reliable and established carriers include Transnasional and KKKl Express.
Leaving KLIA or KLIA 2 is not much different, however, buses are less frequent, so be sure to check your arrival times compared to departure times. Taking a taxi to Melaka saves you a lot of time and costs much higher, and as such, is not recommended.
Starting in Singapore, there are many carriers offering this service with a number of day trips. StarMart Express and 707Express are a good example of this. Most buses leave the Golden Mile Center (Road 505 Beach). However, some people leave behind the textile center on 200 Jalan Sultan Street. Prices vary between 70 MYR and 100 MYR, helping you get back a reasonable change.
One can fly from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and then take a bus from there to Melaka, but this will not save time and will cost you more money.
Coming from Sumatra, Indonesia, there is a ferry that departs from Pekanbaru pier at 9am or 9:30 am, depending on the day. It costs around 120 MYR and will see you spend about seven hours on the floating sea.
Is Melaka a safe place to visit?
Melaka has absolutely no problem with past safety and is an interesting town to explore. Although you do not need to live in fear or maintain vigilance, it is always wise to remain cautious about one's belongings and more expensive items. Keep your eyes open and you'll be all right!
