What kind of training is needed to become an architect?

Becoming an architect requires both education and experience. There are several ways to meet professional education standards, but the most direct path is to obtain a professional architecture degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Commission. There are three degrees recognized by NAAB as professional qualifications: Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), Master of Architecture (MArch) and Doctor of Architecture (DArch). Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Architecture is considered a pre-professional diploma.

BArch programs take at least five years to complete. Students in these programs take general education courses, including courses in calculus and physics. Architecture courses focus on design, architectural history, building materials, construction methods, and building structures. BArch curriculum usually has a number of studio courses where students complete design projects and learn how to draw sketches by hand and create models with computer-aided design, drafting, and building software. Information model.

MArch programs accept students from diverse educational backgrounds, including those who have completed pre-professional architecture programs and who have bachelor's degrees in other fields. These programs may take more than three years to complete and include courses in architectural design, structure and building materials, and architectural history. Like in a BArch program, students complete a number of courses focusing on different topics, such as tectonics, adaptation and urban design. Students are also expected to complete a thesis before graduation.

Many BArch and MArch programs emphasize global experience and encourage or require students to complete the study abroad experience.

Once future architects have graduated from a professionally recognized architectural degree program, the next step in the training process is to complete an internship development program (IDP). These programs are managed by the National Council for Architectural Registration (NCARB). IDP is a three-year paid internship and is usually completed in an architectural practice, but can also be completed in other installations. During the internship and beyond, the trainee working with an adviser is an architect currently licensed.

Are there any certification or licensing requirements?

All states require architects to have a license to practice. Earning a license means meeting education, experience, and testing requirements. These requirements vary by state, but in most cases, the architect must complete a professional degree program, be accredited, complete an IDP and pass the Registration Exam. Architect.

NCARB offers a voluntary certification program for architects who earn a professional architecture degree, complete IDP and pass the Architectural Registration Exam. Architects in many states must meet these certification requirements to obtain a permit, so getting certified can make it easier to move from state to state.

While many architects jobs will be available in the next few years, the competition for these jobs will be very strong. The BLS predicts that architects proficient in green or sustainable design will have the best job prospects.

What are the long-term career prospects for architects?

Architects with many years of experience can find a partner at their architecture firm or become the principal of their own company.

How can I find a job as an architect?

Architects should maintain a portfolio of designs they have created throughout their career. New architects can highlight the projects they completed when they were in school and internships. Your portfolio can help you attract the attention of potential employers, so when you're looking for a job, make sure your portfolio puts it in the right hands.

Some architects are looking for jobs that send their portfolios to any company they are interested in, even if the company doesn't advertise to hire. If you want to look for open positions, many local and national architect societies maintain job boards on their websites.
