What does a graphic designer do?

This is possible for all purposes, from advertising to product packaging. Working as a graphic designer will include:

• -Discussing project requirements (abstracts) with customers and colleagues
• -Provide project cost
• -Choose the most suitable and stylish material
• -Create rough sketches or computer images to show to customers
• -Use specialized computer software to prepare the design
• -Create final layout with exact specifications for font type, font size and color
• -Work by budget and deadline -This role may also be related to the production of 3D designs for packaging, exhibiting and display.

What do I need to do to become a graphic designer?

To become a graphic designer, you will need IT skills and drawing. You will need to be able to find practical solutions to the problems. You will also need great communication skills.

Most professional graphic designers have background degrees, HND or degrees in graphic design or other art and design topics. You will also need working knowledge of desktop design software, such as Illustrator, InDesign or QuarkXPress and image editing packages such as Photoshop. You can do these courses at colleges, private training providers and through self-study.

An employer will care about your design skills and creative ideas as if they were in your professional level. Talented and personal contacts (networks) are important for getting the job. You will need to have an updated portfolio to show potential employers what you can do. Don't be afraid to use your design skills (when appropriate) to make your CV stand out.

Unpaid work experience, vacation jobs and internships will give you the opportunity to grow your portfolio, make contact and impress employers. You can also create a website to showcase your work.

Job competition is very strong and not all jobs are advertised, so as well as building contacts, you have direct access to companies and design agencies. A good starting point is to look for design agencies in the design directory of the UK Design Innovation website.

You can become a basic graphic designer through apprenticeship program. You will need to check what programs are available in your area.
