Steps to becoming an IT expert
Here are the steps you can take to become an IT expert:
Step 1: Earn a bachelor's degree
The BLS maintains that a bachelor's degree in a field related to computers is the most common requirement to become an IT specialist. Related subjects include computer science, information systems and software engineering. Students in bachelor programs usually start by gaining a solid foundation in math, science and engineering. They build broad knowledge of computer science courses in data structure, numerical analysis, data management, and programming languages.
Utilize computer lab resources. Organizations offering computer science programs can also provide sophisticated computer laboratories for students. You should take advantage of these resources and the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the programs and software taught in the classroom and used in the daily activities of an IT professional.
Also consider completing an internship. Because experience is an important part of job hunting in this profession, new level IT professionals may have difficulty finding a job. You can gain some practical experience and professional contact in this area by completing an internship with a local IT company or a company's IT department.
Step 2: Gain professional experience
According to a survey of job posts from monster.com in September 2012, IT specialist jobs often require at least 3 years of experience in this field. The BLS points out that advanced IT security and management analytics positions may require 5 years or more of experience. Usually, less experience is needed at smaller organizations, so aspiring IT professionals may find this is the best place to start their career.
Review also get certified. Although certification is not required to enter this career, it can help show skills and experience to employers. In addition, employers often require IT professionals to have expertise with specific products. Suppliers such as Cisco, Oracle and Microsoft provide certification in their software products. Third-party organizations, like CompTIA, also manage certification for many vendors. Prerequisites and certification requirements vary by institution, although certification is usually given on successful passing of the exam.
Step 3: Consider earning a master's degree
A bachelor's degree may be the most common educational level required to become an IT specialist, but some employers prefer to hire candidates who have earned a master's degree in computer science or related fields. In addition, a master's degree can create more opportunities for individuals seeking career advancement or higher positions in the field. Students in masters programs build on the knowledge they have accumulated during their undergraduate studies and explore computer science theory and practice more broadly. They can take courses on computer graphics, algorithms, artificial intelligence, computational models, and computer vision. Independent research and research in computer science, as well as a thesis, may also be required.
