Get your Medicare card

You get a Medicare card when you enroll in Medicare. We usually tell you your Medicare number right away and send your card after 3 to 4 weeks. We will send it to the address you provided us.

You can use a digital copy of your Medicare card as soon as you sign up. To use the digital version of your Medicare card, you need to:

-Sign in to the Express Plus Medicare app.

-Choose the Card tab on the main screen.

To access the application, you need to have a myGov account linked to your Medicare online account. If you do not have these, you will need to set them up before you can download the application.

You can only use 2 Medicare cards at a time. When you are 15 years old or older, you can get your own Medicare card. Read more about your Medicare card.

Use your Medicare card

You can use your Medicare card to access any of the following:

-A variety of medical services and prescriptions for lower costs

-Care as a public patient in a public hospital

-Cheaper drugs at a pharmacy under the Pharmacy Benefits Program.

Read more about getting health care and Medicare.

It's easy if you take your Medicare card or your number with you when you go to the doctor or hospital. You may also need it when you fill your prescription at a pharmacy.

You can also use digital copies of your cards. You can use this if you don't have a Medicare card with you.

When you make a Medicare claim, we need to match the information with the details on your Medicare card. Your card has your name on it. If you have a partner or children, your card may also list their details. If so, you should get a duplicate tag. You can only receive 1 more card.

Replace your Medicare card

The Medicare card is valid for 5 years. We will send you a new card before your old card expires. You do not have to do anything unless your address has changed. If so, update your information so the card comes to you.

If your card is lost or stolen or damaged, you can get a new Medicare card.

If someone dies

If a family member listed on your card dies, we may reissue a new card if you ask us to.

When you act for someone, it means you manage their Medicare issues for them. There must be a good reason why they can't do this. For example, they may not be able to make decisions because of illness or disability.

To act for someone you must:

-Aged 18 years and older

-As a close friend or relative of that person

-Does not have a paid job as their caregiver

- There is evidence they cannot act on their own, like a medical certificate or authorization.

If you are acting for someone, you can:

- Ask us questions on their behalf

-Make a decision about Medicare for them

-Update their contact information and bank

-Requires Medicare for them.

There are 3 reasons why you can act for someone:

-You have their power of attorney

-You are their guardian or legal administrator

-You need to act for them because they cannot act for themselves.

Apply to act for others

You need to apply to us if you want to act for someone and:

-You do not have their power of attorney

-You are not their guardian or legal administrator.

To apply, follow these steps.

-Fill out the authorization to act on one's form.

-Get the documents you need to backup your application. This includes evidence that the person needs help. The form lists the types of documents we need.

-Send your forms, documents and photo IDs to us. The ways you can do this are on the form.

It is your choice to donate your organs or not.

As an organ donor, you can save many lives. Right now, more than 1,400 people are awaiting organ transplants.

You can choose organs and tissues to donate. You can also change your mind about becoming a sponsor at any time.

When you decide, record your wishes in the Australian Organ Register.

Remember, it is important to tell your family what you decide about organ donation. They will have the final say on this when you die, so they need to know what you want.

In 9 out of 10 cases, families come with the options listed in the registry.

You can read more about organ donation on the DonateLife website. DonateLife helps provide government programs to improve organ and tissue donation. Their website has useful information about:

-What can you give?

- Who can donate

-How does the donation process work

Register your decision

The Australian Organ Donor Register is fast and easy to join and update online. This is the only national registry in Australia.

This register is about organ donation for those who need it. It is not about organ donation for research.

When you sign up, you tell us:

- Decide your contribution

-Which organ or tissue you want to donate?

If you change your mind, you can update your choice in the registry.

It is important to register as it is the best way to fulfill your desires.
