Who can register?

You can sign up for Medicare if you live in Australia and you:

- An Australian citizen

-A New Zealand citizen

-A permanent resident of Australia

-Please permanent resident

-A temporary resident protected by a minister's order.

You can also register if you are a citizen or permanent resident of either:

- Norfolk Island

- Cocos (Keeling) Islands

-The Christmas island

-Island Howe.

You can register if you are from a reciprocal health care agreement country.

What you need to register

You need to provide us with different documents depending on your circumstances. Read about the documents you need if:

-You are an Australian citizen

-You are a citizen of New Zealand

-You are a permanent resident

-You are applying for permanent residence

-You are a temporary resident protected by the Minister's order

-You have adopted a child.

How to register

Bring your Medicare registration form and supporting documents to the service center.

You get a Medicare card when you enroll in Medicare. We will usually tell you your Medicare number right away. Your card will arrive in 3 to 4 weeks. We will send it to the address you provided us.

You can use a digital copy of your Medicare card as soon as you sign up. To get the digital version, you need to sign in to the Express Plus Medicare app. To use the application, you need to have a myGov account linked to your Medicare online account. If you don't have these, set them up and then download the app.

Sign up when you have your parent's Medicare card

If you are using a parent's Medicare card, you are already registered. This means you do not need to register again. When you are 15 years old, you can get your own Medicare card.

Register your newborn baby

You can register your newborn baby using the Infant Statement. You will receive a statement from the hospital. Learn how to register your baby.

Sign up when you are a native

If you are an Indigenous person and do not have a general identification document, you may use arbitration instead. You and your referees need to fill in the Medicare and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medicare registration form. The form tells who can be an arbitrator.

If you have general identification documents, bring them and your Medicare registration form to the service center.

Enroll when you visit Australia

We may cover some health care costs if you are from a country we have an agreement with. You can be cared for as a public patient in a public hospital without enrolling in Medicare.

Set up your Medicare account online

Follow these steps to get online.

Step 1 - Check you are enrolled in Medicare

You need to be registered in Medicare to set up your online account. If you have a Medicare card or number, you are already registered. If you do not, find out how to enroll.

Step 2 - Log in through myGov

You need to log in through myGov to register and use your Medicare account.

Step 3 - Register your Medicare online account

After you log in to myGov, select Services and then choose Medicare to sign up. We will ask you some questions to make sure it's you. It will take about 10 minutes and you will need your Medicare card.

We may ask questions about your last doctor visit, such as:

-Location of medical practice

-The name of your doctor.

You will know you have set up when you can see Medicare as a linked service on your myGov homepage.

Register your child for Medicare

You can register your child when you request some family payments or by using a form.

On this page

You need to register your newborn baby in Medicare as soon as possible. An infant is a child up to 52 weeks or until their first birthday.

Your hospital or midwife will give you the Parent Package after giving birth. It will include an infant Declaration form. A doctor or midwife must sign the form on the last page. Use this form as proof of your birth to enroll them in Medicare.

If you lose the Infant Declaration form, you will need your child's birth certificate to register at a service center.

If your child is over 52 weeks old, you will need to register them at a service center. Bring your Medicare application form and supporting documents. Read more about the supporting documents you need to enroll in Medicare.

If you request a payment from the Centrelink family

You can register your baby to use your Centrelink online account when you request any family payments:

-Family tax benefits include prepayment for infants and additional payments for infants

- Parental permission

-Daddy and partner pay.

Use the completed Infant Declaration form in your request. It is in the Parent Package that your hospital or midwife gives you.

You can submit a copy of the form using:

-Your Centrelink online account through myGov

-Your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

We will enroll your children and add them to your Medicare card. We will also add them to the Australian Immunization Register.

We will send you a new Medicare card with your baby on it. You should receive it in 3 to 4 weeks.

You can also use the Newborn Declaration form to register babies for both:

-My health records

-The Medicare Safety Net.

Remember, you can add your baby to another Medicare card. This means you can add your baby to the Medicare card for both parents. You can only list them on 2 cards. To do this, complete the Application to copy or transfer from one Medicare card to another.

If you do not request payment of a Centrelink family

If you do not require any family payments, you can register your baby using:

-Your Medicare account online through myGov

-Your infant declaration form

-The Medicare registration and amendment form for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Use your online account

You can register your child for Medicare with your online Medicare account through myGov.

If you do not have an online Medicare account linked to myGov, you will need to set it up.

You will need to upload a proof of birth documents.

We will enroll your children and add them to your Medicare card. We will also add them to the Australian Immunization Register.

We will send you a new Medicare card with your baby on it. You should receive it in 3 to 4 weeks. You can get a digital version of your updated card right away in the Express Plus Medicare app.

You can also choose to register your baby for both:

-My health records

-Your Medicare Safety Net family.

Remember, you can add your baby to another Medicare card. This means you can add your baby to the Medicare card for both parents. You can only list them on 2 cards. To do this, complete the Application to copy or transfer from one Medicare card to another.

Use your infant declaration form

You can upload a Newborn Declaration form using your Medicare account online. You can also bring the completed form to the service center. The instructions are on the form.

We will enroll your children and add them to your Medicare card. We will also add them to the Australian Immunization Register.

We will send you a new Medicare card with your baby on it. You should receive it in 3 to 4 weeks. You can get a digital version of your updated card right away in the Express Plus Medicare app. An employee can give you a temporary paper Medicare card.

Use the Medicare and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medicare registration form

You can use the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medicare registration and modification form to enroll your child. You will need to have an arbitrator to sign the form. Forms that explain who can be a referee.

You can fill out the form at home or at a service center. Then take it to an agent, access point or service center or send it to us. The forms tell you how to do this.

If you do not have a Newborn Declaration form

If you lose the Newborn Declaration form, there are other ways you can register your baby:

-Use your Medicare account online via myGov.

-Submit a Medicare registration form at a service center.

You will need to provide evidence of the birth document. All documents must be certified. For a complete list of approved certification methods, check the Attorney General's website.

This could be one of the following:

- Birth certificate or certificate

-Other Australian Government documents verifying the child's name and date of birth

-Mail from doctor or midwife attending the birth.

If you are using a doctor or midwife letter as evidence, it must include:

-Details about the child's parents

-The name, date and place of birth of the child

-Signature, qualifications, contact information and registration number of a doctor or midwife.

We will enroll your children and add them to your Medicare card. We will also add them to the Australian Immunization Register.

We will send you a new Medicare card with your baby on it. You should receive it in 3 to 4 weeks. You can get a digital version of your updated card right away in the Express Plus Medicare app.
