It can help reduce hospital costs when you reach the threshold. You do not need to register if you are single. If you register as a family or a couple, we combine your medical expenses.

What does Medicare cover when you give birth?

When you give birth, we may pay for services provided by midwives and obstetricians.

If you give birth in a hospital, you can choose to be a public or private patient. As a public patient at a public hospital, you will not have to pay.

If you give birth at a birth center, you should ask about the cost when you book.

After you have children

If your baby needs extra care, such as specialist services and intensive care units, we can help at a cost.

We also cover some or all of:

Add your baby to your Medicare card

It is important to add your new baby to your Medicare card as soon as possible. Once you have added them, we will send you an updated card. If you have the Express Plus Medicare mobile app, your digital Medicare card will show your baby's name right away.

Your midwife or hospital will provide you with a form as part of the new Parent Package. You can use this form to add your baby to your card.

Medicare for children

When you enroll your children in Medicare, they have access to the same benefits you do. They can also access our programs for children.

How to register your child for Medicare

Ask your health professional if we recognize them and if they can treat your child under this program.

Support vaccinations for young children

Children need different vaccines at birth and when they grow up, to protect them from disease. We pay for all vaccines under the National Immunization Program. To find out what your child needs, read about immunizing children on the Ministry of Health website.

Remember, your child must be immunized to receive some family payments from us. Your child must meet immunization requirements if you have:

-Family tax benefit (FTB) Part A

- Child care allowance.

When your child is vaccinated, your provider will record it in the Australian Immunization Register. This is a national register of vaccines available to people of all ages in Australia. Access your child's vaccination history statement with your Medicare online account or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.

Example

Liz and Pat have a child, Ruby. When Ruby turns 3, they register her to look after the child for the first time. They want to claim Child Care Benefit from us to help pay the fees. Support for children with disabilities

When you are carers

If you are a parent or carer of a disabled child, you may be eligible to receive a Child Disability Support Payment. You must have a Caregiver Benefit.

You may also receive other payments like:

- Caregiver Pay if you cannot work because you are looking after someone

- Care allowance for income support if you provide extra daily care

-Additional caregiver to help with care expenses

-Adjust the Caregiver to get help after a catastrophic event.

When your child is diagnosed and treated early

You can get medical services paid for under the Better Start Program for Children with Disabilities. This helps early diagnosis and treatment of children with a qualifying condition.

If eligible, we can help cover the costs of the following services from health professionals:

-Up to 20 treatment services.

When your child has significant or permanent disabilities

Under the Autism Children Program, we can help with the costs of:

Depending on where you live, you may receive help from your state or territory government. It is best to ask your eye doctor what help is available.

Get started with Medicare

To start using Medicare, you need to register with us. We can usually tell you your Medicare number on the same day. This means you can get health care right after signing up.

You can expect to receive your Medicare card after 6 to 8 weeks. We send it to the address you provided when you registered.

If you have children, register them with Medicare as soon as you can.

There are 2 ways to apply for Medicare if you are Indigenous.

If you have documents confirming who you are

Follow these steps to register with your identification documents.

-Find out 3 of the common documents we use to confirm your identity. This could be your birth certificate, driver's license and phone bill.

-In and fill out the Medicare registration form. You can do this at your local service center if you need help or can't print at home.

-Buy your documents and samples to your dealer, access point or service center.

Your card can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to arrive.

If you have no ID

Follow these steps to register if you do not have an identification document.

-Print and complete the Medicare and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registration form. You can do this at home or at your local service center.

-Get an approved referee to sign the form. Who are the forms of interpretation of an arbitrator. For example, the arbitrator may be the principal or nurse.

-Buy your application form to your local dealer, access point or service center or send it to us. The forms tell you how you can do this.

Regular checkups

Regular checkups can help identify chronic illnesses. A chronic illness is a condition that lasts for 6 months or longer, like arthritis or asthma. Identifying chronic illness earlier means that you can treat it earlier.

Get help with drug costs

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme offers reduced prescription drug costs. You may get help to buy medicine if you have a chronic illness or are at risk for it.

Immunizations for older Australians
