-Get help abroad
This page is for Australians preparing to travel abroad. If you're already in a foreign country and need help, see what to do if something goes wrong.
Road rules, etiquette and local laws
Understand that driving and riding abroad can be very different from returning home. Even in countries that are considered quite similar to Australia.
If you make a mistake, you may be in trouble. You may cause an accident, causing injury to yourself or others. Another driver may assault you (rage on the road), or the authorities may arrest and imprison you.
You are responsible for learning local ways and complying.
-Learn the law. Go left or right, yielders and other road rules.
-Follow the etiquette. Learn about merging considerations, lanes, and strokes.
-Honk? Honking is polite, and expected, in some places. Especially to let pedestrians know you are there. In others, it is illegal in most non-emergency scenarios.
-Check the license you need. An international driving license, an Australian motorcycle or motorbike license. If long-term, you may need a local license.
Learn more about being in the law.
International driving license
You may need an international driving license (IDP), as well as an Australian license. If you drive without the correct license, you could be arrested or jailed.
IDP is a United Nations-sanctioned document. It allows you to drive a car or ride a motorbike when traveling abroad. IDP:
-Work in more than 150 countries
- Printed in nine languages, so local authorities can read it
- Valid for 12 months from the date of issue
-Include photo ID and main personal information about the driver.
Many rental companies will not let you rent a car without a valid IDP. Some insurance policies will not protect you in an accident if you are driving without a license.
We strongly recommend that you have a valid IDP before leaving Australia. You can register IDP online (Australian Automobile Association, AAA). Or, through your state or territory motorbike club.

Road crime
Before you go, find out which road-based crimes are common in your destination. Find out if there are any specific areas or situations that are higher risk.
-Looting / Looting. Where the robber takes your car or you may be forced to abandon your suitcases from the vehicle, this could be at the gun point.
-Cheat . Australians have been harassed and threatened by transport operators for returning cars thought to be damaged.
See more general advice on staying safe and avoiding hazards.
Insurance for driving and riding
Do not drive a car or ride a bike without proper insurance. Get travel insurance for you, and private insurance for the car.
If you have an accident, everything becomes very expensive, very quickly. If you are injured, overseas medical assistance is very expensive. If a car is damaged, the cost of repair (or excessive rent) can cost a small fortune.
Exact insurance can cover these costs. Find out more about travel insurance. Also read the travel insurance purchase guide (CHOICE).
Insurance of car and motorbike rental
Reputable car rental companies have comprehensive insurance on their vehicles. Do not drive overseas unless you can confirm the car company has comprehensive coverage on it.
-Learn about redundancy. Leasing companies call it "excessive collisions". This is unlike your regular car insurance at home, it's a lot more expensive. Don't be surprised if you exceed $ 1,000.
- Ask about over buying. You can often pay the rental company more to reduce or eliminate excessive collisions.
-Read the print. Exquisite policy exclusion can take you off guard. If an exclusion doesn't suit you, or seems right, shop around. Find another rental company with a more reasonable policy.
-Check your travel insurance. Some auto travel insurance companies include excess purchase insurance. Others offer it as a filler. Compare and choose the best deal for you. Not just financially, compare the conditions in print.
-In the law. Violating the law, invalidating your policy.
Do not save insurance in an effort to save money. If you have an accident without proper insurance, you may have to pay the full cost
Hi to replace your vehicle and anyone else involved.

Travel insurance if you are injured in an accident
Before you go, get travel insurance. If you are injured and need medical assistance, you may want to claim. You need insurance whether you are driving, riding or passengers. If not, all your expenses are on you.
- Medical assistance. The insurer may cover the medical costs associated with a road accident. You may need to pay extra to make sure you are covered for what you plan to do, such as riding a motorbike. Check the fine prints and insure your insurance.
-Cost cancel. Your insurance company may pay you for cancellation or other expenses if you need to change your plan because of an accident.
-To exclude, to expel . Most policies are void if you break the law when an accident occurs. Even if the accident is not your fault. These are any road laws such as giving way, or keeping to the right, as well as serious crimes such as driving for alcohol or drugs.
-Legal costs. If someone tries to sue you for an accident, you could be in trouble. Whether or not it is a legitimate request. Some travel insurance policies may cover your legal costs. Ask your insurance company.
Exclude common insurance
-Law . If you violate local traffic laws by all means when you have an accident. Stay within the law.
- Drugs and alcohol. If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Sometimes even a prescription is a problem.
-List of drivers. If the driver at that time is not listed as a driver with the car rental company. Always list all drivers.
-Condition . If you violate any terms of the lease. A common thing is how many kilometers you can travel per day. Check out the conditions.
- License. If you are driving without an accurate license, including driving under an Australian license if the country says you need an international driving license.
Learn more about common insurance exclusions and how to read the fine print.

- Rental companies. If there is a problem with your car, talk to the rental company.
