You will be sent a polite reminder before your vehicle registration deadline. To receive email reminders for renewal registration or update your address details, please maintain your contact details online before completing the transaction.
Most vehicles can be renewed online and up to 3 months before the vehicle's expiry date. Once the extension is completed, your registration certificate will be sent to your designated postal address. Please allow up to 3 business days to receive Access Canberra payments and an additional 7 business days to receive your registration certificate.
Tests may be required before refreshing the vehicle. Request for inspection will be stated in the vehicle registration renewal notice and can be found by visiting the motor vehicle inspection page.
For business facilities, input tax credit benefits may be changed. You should consult your tax advisor or the Australian Tax Office on 13 28 66 for more information and ask if this applies to you.
Renew your vehicle registration
To drive on the Northern Territory (NT) road, you must renew or register another car with a Motor Vehicle Register (MVR).
You can pay your subscription for a period of one, three, six or 12 months.
Before you renew
Check your renewal notice to find out when your road test is due.
You can renew your subscription for a short time (such as a month or three months) until the test expires.
You can get a concession on your subscription fee. Find out which discount coupons you can use at MVR.
If your vehicle is due to inspection
The inspection must be performed by a competent inspector.
Check if the inspector has transferred the inspection report (green card) to MVR.
If they don't, you'll need to manually submit it through any of the following:

Registration of any motor vehicle or trailer expires at midnight on the expiry date or registration end date. When a vehicle is not registered, it cannot be used or parked on public roads. What if my subscription has expired?
-The vehicle registration can be extended even if it expires up to 3 months from the expiry date.
-If registration has expired more than 3 months, the vehicle must be checked at the approved inspection station before re-registration, see Re-registration.
An exception is the seasonally registered cars, these are heavy vehicles owned and operated by the main manufacturers or heavy snow vehicles. These cars may use a registration period of three or six months that coincides with the time of a seasonal activity, and then cannot be registered for up to 12 months, until the vehicle is required to renew. once again. Seasonally registered vehicles do not receive renewal notice.
What is the grace period?
- Light vehicles (Gross Vehicles Mass (GVM) 4.5 tons or less) can be extended within 6 or 12 months.
- Heavy vehicles (GVM above 4.5 tons) can be extended for 3, 6 or 12 months.

Are there any additional costs for subscriptions under 12 months?
-There is an administrative fee and a surcharge for the MAIB premium that is applied every time you use the recurring option (pay 3 or 6 monthly).
What if I want to request concessions?
-If you are recognized as eligible for a concession, your renewal notice will show the concession amount.
-If you are the concession owner and you have not previously requested a concession, you will need to attend the Tasmanian Service store and update your details - see Discounts and Discounts.
