Agricultural Technician

$50,000 - $60,000 a year
Rock Ridge Farming Pty Ltd is currently seeking an experienced Agricultural Technician to perform and supervise a range of day to day farm operations on one of our banana farms based in Mareeba, North Queensland.
About the role
To assist the farm manager to carry out duties associated with the day-to-day and long-term management of all areas involved in running a banana farm. It will be their assisted responsibility to help with developing and implementing appropriate strategies to meet longer-term production goals and deliver gains towards profitability, efficiency and quality, this is a hands-on role.
Duties and responsibilities (but are not limited to) the following:
- assist with examining topographical, physical and soil characteristics of farmland to determine its most effective use and identify nutrient deficiencies
- assisting in developing new methods of planting, fertilising, harvesting and processing crops to achieve optimum land usage
- analysing produce to set and maintain standards of quality and yields of banana crops
- keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them and assist agricultural scientists in identifying pathogenic micro-organisms and insects, parasites, fungi and weeds harmful to crops and assisting in areas such as research, production, servicing and marketing. in devising methods of control
- maintaining accurate up to date records
- assist in ensuring that the farm meets projected KPI’s
- organising farm equipment, crops monitoring and agricultural products
- Ensuring field activities are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures, quality and safety standards
- training/instructing and supervising farm workers
- ensuring compliance with government regulations and health and safety standards across the farm
- protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity
- understanding the implications of the weather and making contingency plans
- maintain sheds, equipment and facilities to maintain health standards and high-quality of produce
- organising maintenance/repair of farm property, equipment and machinery
- competent in the using and maintaining horticultural plant equipment
- storage and application chemicals and fertilizers
Variations in workloads relate to seasonal demands – some additional hours may be necessary during busy periods (eg during harvesting) and Agricultural Technician will be expected to deal with emergencies.
Skills and experience
- Qualifications and training required
- Possess some qualifications in business, management, agriculture, horticulture, land management or crop/plant science. However, we regard practical skills and experience as being equally as important as academic qualifications and training will be conducted when necessary.

Salary: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 per year
